The Portrait of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was created and presented in 1938, on Guanyin’s Birthday, by Mr. Wang Zhen, a renowned painter of the late Qing and early Republican era and then-President of the Buddhist Association of the Republic of China in Shanghai.
An inscription in the upper right corner reads: “Homage to the greatly compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who delivers beings from suffering and hardship. May her compassion guide all sentient beings to liberation. Respectfully inscribed on the 19th day of the second lunar month, Year Wu-Yin (1938) by Buddhist disciple Wang Zhen.”
Below the inscription are two seals: a white-background seal reading “Wang Zhen Changshou” (Wang Zhen, Longevity) and a red-background seal reading “Yiting Rili” (A Pavilion of Daily Benefit).
A dedication in the lower left corner states: “Offered to Tung Lin Kok Yuen for reverence,” alongside a red-background seal reading “Wholeheartedly Pay Homage”.
