Hanging on the left side of the interior of the main entrance to the Grand Buddha Hall at Tung Lin Kok Yuen is an inscription that reads: “To the honourable Xingtai Fangbo for guidance on rectitude. Painted in Autumn of the Yi-You year by 72-year-old Shunjiang Wang Chao, inscribed by Jin Peng.” The artwork features three seals: “Seal of Wang Chao” (white-script square seal), “Shunjiang” (red-script square seal), and “Seal of Jin Peng” (red-script square seal). This painting, created by Wang Chao in 1885, with inscriptions by Jin Peng, was presented to Xu Xingtai, the Provincial Governor.
The title, “Depicting Grandeur and Long Life,” originates from the Song Dynasty text “Taiping Guangji, Immortals XIX: Guo Ziyi,” and is also found in Du Guangting’s “Stories of Encounters with Immortals”. The painting embodies the theme expressed in its title: blessings from the heavens bestowing wealth and longevity.
